Week 2 Return to Earth: 2509 Video
This week I created the short video Return to Earth: 2509 using the iMovie software included on my Apple computer. This 59 second video clip took about 1 hour to create. For this project I chose to use an older version of iMovie- version 6.0.3 instead of the new version of iMovie that came with iLife ‘08. I did this for 2 reasons, the first being that the older iMovie allows you to import the .mov file format that Discovery Streaming files download in, and the second being that iMovie HD 6.0.3 also allows more fancy editing choices, such as fast motion that I wanted to use with this project. I began the project by searching Discovery Streaming for video clips about Earth. I was particularly looking for some clips including a spinning Earth, mountains, wildlife and the Grand Canyon. I found these qualities in two clips, the first one wasFearless Planet: Earth Story, by Discovery Education, 2007 and the second was Earth, by 100% Educational Videos, 1999. After downloading several segments of these videos, I imported them into iMovie and began splitting them into the segments that I needed and extracting and removing the audio from each small clip. I particularly wanted to build up the action, starting with a slow spinning Earth and then taking very small clips of wildlife and life on Earth and fast forwarding them to make the viewer feel as if they were on a fast moving ride. Before moving on to placing my videos into the order that I wanted, I went into Garageband and created my background music and exported it to iTunes. After this came placing my music at the playhead and placing each video segment where I wanted it to build rising and falling action. Once this was complete I added my title, and the intro slides to the movie using the editing button. Next, I added a credits slide to the end using Keynote. The finale was exporting the video as a Quicktime file and uploading the video into You Tube. I was happy that the end product felt and sounded exactly the way I had planned in my video plan.
